Erectile dysfunction is also known as impotence. It means you can't maintain an erect enough penis for satisfactory sexual intercourse. Many men have erection problems at times and the chance of this happening increases with age.

Erectile dysfunction is not a disease, but a symptom of some other problem, either physical or psychological or a mixture of both. It can be distressing and may cause loss of confidence and self-esteem or depression, as well as relationship problems. There are several solutions but recognising the problem and talking about it with your Urologist or urology nurse are the key first steps.

At Urology Associates we have a specialist nurse clinic to support men to find a solution to their erection problems.

Medications

You have probably read about oral medications such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. They are from a group of drugs called PDE5-inhibitors. There are many forms of these medications available to help men with mild forms of erectile dysfunction. Some men will have an excellent result, some will not. Usually your GP will be able to recommend and trial you on one or more of these medications - or they may suggest that you come and see us.

Caverject

Caverject is an injection used for erectile dysfunction including weak erections or impotence. It is usually used if oral medications for erectile dysfunction have not worked or have caused side affects which means you are unable to comfortably or safely continue them. Urology Associates has a specialist nurse that can educate you on the use of these injections. Click here for more information on Caverject.

Penile Prosthesis or Implant

The artificial penile prosthesis is the gold standard amongst treatment options for erectile dysfunction. It allows total control of when and for how long you have an erection, and gives the spontaneity back to you and your parter. The most commonly used devices are the AMS700 which is an implant manufactured by Boston Scientific or the Titan, an implant manufactured by Coloplast. They have both been used successfully for decades by men around the world. Click here for more information on the AMS700 or here for information on the Coloplast Titan - both of which can be implanted for you by one of our specialists in erectile dysfunction at Urology Associates.
